Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is one of the most frequently performed procedures for morbid obesity in the U.S.16 The REALIZE Solution† for gastric bypass uses both a restrictive and a malabsorptive surgery technique. It restricts food intake and the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. In addition to creating a smaller stomach pouch, the surgery changes the body's normal digestive process. As a result, food bypasses a large part of the stomach and most of the small intestine. See how gastric bypass works.

Gastric bypass surgery studies have shown that gastric bypass patients typically lost 61.6% of their excess weight after bariatric surgery.9 Many health problems (back pain, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression) improve or are resolved following surgery.

Gastric bypass leads to significant weight loss and improved health

Studies conducted on gastric bypass surgery show that after 1 year, weight loss can average 77% of excess body weight.17 A comprehensive clinical review of bariatric surgery data showed that patients who had a bariatric surgical procedure experienced complete resolution or improvement of some of their obesity-related health problems (known as comorbid conditions), including type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high lipid [fat] levels in the bloodstream), high blood pressure, and obstructive sleep apnea.9 One gastric bypass information study found that gastric bypass surgery reduced the total number of serious health problems of participating patients by 96%.17

A recent study shows that laparoscopic (minimally invasive) weight loss surgery can lead to significant savings for patients. One important reason is that weight loss surgery may help to improve or resolve conditions associated with obesity, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure,9 so patients save money on related prescription drugs, doctor visits, and hospital visits.
